The Editorial Stylist and Editorial Barber awards are for hairdressers and barbers who are H&BNZ members wanting to expand their personal brand through photographic competition success.
2024 NZHA Editorial Stylist of the Year
The overall Editorial Stylist of the Year is awarded to one of the winners of the following categories:
Editorial Stylist - Colour Concept
Editorial Stylist - Cover Shot
Editorial Stylist - Derek Elvy Visionary Award
The winner of Editorial Stylist of the Year will receive a commemorative trophy, an exclusive interview with Images Magazine, and $750.00 donated by Hair & Barber New Zealand.
2024 NZHA Editorial Stylist – Cover Shot
The Editorial Stylist awards are for hairdressers wanting to expand their personal brand through photographic competition success. While showcasing technical excellence of the hair is important, emphasis and consideration in creating an overall commercially photographed look is vital. Create an image suitable for the front cover of a magazine that will forecast fashion for the coming season.
2024 NZHA Editorial Stylist– Colour Concept
The Editorial Stylist awards are for hairdressers wanting to expand their personal brand through photographic competition success. A high level of technical artistry will be demonstrated to produce a unique but progressive concept. Attention to current trends while also thinking ahead is a must. Create an image suitable for the front cover of a magazine that will forecast fashion for the coming season.
2024 NZHA Editorial Stylist – Derek Elvy Visionary Award
This award celebrates the creative genius of the late Derek Elvy. Derek worked closely with Hair & Barber New Zealand on the brief, which is to create a photographic image that is beautiful but arresting, contemporary and directional and have a technical challenge to it. Whilst the focus should be on hair, ultimately the judges will be asked to choose a fashion forward editorial shot that is progressive (Avant Garde).
2024 NZHA Editorial Collection
The 2024 NZHA Editorial Collection will feature a cohesive storyline between all images, showcasing your technical expertise & versatility.
Three images will make up your submission, with only one model in each shot. The model in each image can be the same person, or all different people, as long as each image is reworked and different to the others.
Unlike other editorial categories where a headshot is sometimes preferred, consideration should be given to capturing a full length shot of the model, to further promote your creative intentions. Hair, make up and clothing will help link the story between the images.
This category is open to both barbers and hairdressers. Where an entrant is skilled in both barbering and hairdressing techniques, they may choose to highlight a hybrid of skills.
2024 NZHA Editorial Stylist – Next Generation - Sponsored by Premier, part of Skills Group
The Editorial Stylist awards are for hairdressers wanting to expand their personal brand through photographic competition success. Whilst the focus should be on hair, ultimately the judges will be asked to choose a fashion forward editorial shot that is current or progressive.
This award is given to a stylist who has been employed within the hairdressing profession for less than four years (as at 31 October 2024) to celebrate the talent of the future of the profession.
2024 NZHA Editorial Stylist – New Talent - Sponsored by Images
The Editorial Stylist awards are for New Zealand hairdressers who are Hair & Barber New Zealand (H&BNZ) members and wanting to expand their personal brand through photographic competition success. Whilst the focus should be on hair, ultimately the judges will be asked to choose a fashion forward editorial shot that is current or progressive.
The New Talent award is given to a stylist who is a Hair & Barber New Zealand member or enrolled in a full-time course at an H&BNZ member Training Provider and has been in the profession for less than 12 months (as at 31 October 2024). It celebrates students by giving them a chance to showcase their creative talents.
2024 NZHA Patrick Cameron Instagram Challenge (Bridal) – Senior
The Patrick Cameron Instagram Challenge for 2024 is all about ‘Bridal’, soft curls, intricate braids, elegant looks, whatever you think a bridal hairstyle looks like, with a focus on a romantic shot and an aspirational finished look.
This award is given to a stylist who has been employed within the hairdressing profession for four years or more (as at 31 October 2024).

The Patrick Cameron Instagram Challenge for 2024 is all about ‘Bridal’, soft curls, intricate braids, elegant looks, whatever you think a bridal hairstyle looks like, with a focus on a romantic shot and an aspirational finished look.
This award is given to a stylist who has been employed within the hairdressing profession for less than four years (as at 31 October 2024).
